Learn about selecting cold-resilient chargers, placement tips, maintenance practices, and more to ensure optimal performance in any weather condition. Embrace winter confidently with a weather-ready EV charging setup!

As the winter chill sets in, electric vehicle (EV) owners often find themselves pondering the resilience of their EV chargers in the face of icy temperatures. The concern is valid—extreme cold weather can impact not just the vehicle's battery but also the charging infrastructure. If you're among those wondering whether your EV charger is up for the challenge of winter, here's what you need to know.

How Does Cold Weather Actually Effect Your EV?

Cold temperatures affect batteries by slowing down chemical reactions within the cells. This can potentially reduce the overall range of your EV. This can significantly affect the performance of your vehicle and may give users range anxiety if there are holiday plans that are farther away than usual.

Preventative Measures

Where you install your charger matters. Try to place it in a sheltered location, away from direct exposure to snow, rain, or extreme wind. If possible, consider using a cover or enclosure to shield it from the harshest elements. Regular maintenance can significantly extend the lifespan of your EV charger. Conduct periodic checks, especially during the winter months, to ensure that connections are secure, cables are intact, and there's no accumulation of ice or snow that could interfere with charging.

Selecting Cold-Resilient Chargers

Some EV chargers are designed explicitly with the idea of being able to withstand any weather condition. The National Electrical Manufacturer’s Association (NEMA) created a standard for EV chargers so that consumers have a better idea on what their chargers are protected from. Look for a charger that has been tested and given at least a rating of NEMA 3 if you are planning on to charge inside and outside.

These chargers typically come with features such as insulated cables, weatherproof casings, and specialized components to function optimally in freezing conditions. Our products here at Webasto have been tested by NEMA and have even been given a rating of NEMA 6P on our Webasto Go. This means that while being withstand any weather conditions, its also safe from prolonged submersion and from damage from ice forming on the outside of the enclosure (NEMA).

Consult the Manual and Manufacturer

Always refer to the user manual or contact the manufacturer directly for specific guidance on cold weather handling. They may provide recommendations or additional insights tailored to your charger's make and model.

Remember, while most modern EV chargers are designed to handle various weather conditions, taking proactive measures can go a long way in ensuring smooth operation during winter. By selecting the right charger, placing it strategically, and maintaining it diligently, you can confidently navigate the cold months without worrying about your EV charger's performance.
